"Please oh please let the suspect look like the kind of person who represents the group I already suspect was behind it"

Pretty much everyone, as we wait with bated breath for the first suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing to be arrested.

The sort of person that I suspect to be behind it is not necessarily the sort of person I hope is behind it. I hope that the culprit is from a background that will not trigger extreme reactions from the public. However, if you ask me to offer odds I can't say with confidence that the culprit is NOT from a group that will trigger extreme reactions from the public.

Nobody can say anything* with confidence yet. Kind of the point. But yes, it is perfectly predictable that if it is a brown, foreign and/or Muslim person we will have the right wing noise machine in full cry. If it is some sort of white domestic anti-gov type then we will get the "lone crazy" and "you can't prove he was right wing" story.

*Oh, it is most definitely a "he". That we can predict with confidence.

If the attacker is not a Muslim we are unlikely to see a significant military response. Unless there's some foreign cause/movement that isn't yet on my radar as a mere reader of news, and they chose Monday to strike a blow on behalf of the oppressed people of "NowhereIveHeardOfStan."

If the attacker isn't from a background that will provoke a military response, I'll be so relieved that I won't really have it in me to get upset over the inevitable "you can't prove he's right wing" responses and whatnot. If there's no war, I'll call that good enough.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing lesbian Korean/black Buddhist/Jewish disabled women take their places in the annals of terrorists. FOR EQUALITY!!!

It is sad we've come to this Alex.

My husband thinks that the identity of the attacker should never be revealed. Nor his purpose. Isn't that what he wanted? (I am assuming the person(s) is male, but I could be wrong). The attacker does not deserve the spotlight, however negative, and even if he ends up getting executed. At the same time, if the media reports that there is an arrest, but will not reveal the identity of the suspect, their story would not have credibility.

  • DrugMonkey says:

Are you similar with the "falseflag" brand of conspiracy nut job, eeke? This could never ever happen...

  • eeke says:

I see. So you think that revealing the ID of an attacker will change things with the conspiracy nut jobs? Ha! I know that if someone is arrested, every fucking little detail about that person will get the spotlight whether we want to hear about it or not (just like the graphic images..). I am not sure I agree with my husband, but to some degree, it makes sense to withhold the attacker's identity and "message," if there is one.

Yeh, I feel exactly the same way.

  • drugmonkey says:

    eeke,

No, I think that saying "yeah, we found him but we're not telling you a thing about it" would not only fan the nutjob flames but recruit more participants in tinfoil hats. Like a LOT more participants. Wouldn't be worth the fallout...

My sister ran the Boston Marathon. She was also staying in a hotel next to the finish line. Thankfully, she wasn't hurt.

Doesn't make the whole thing any less horrific. I keep thinking about it. I have been alternately relieved and laughing and normal and then suddenly crying since then.

I don't care what or who these people are or this person is. I just want them to get what they deserve.

Or you could do one better and actively tackle all the nearby browns who had the temerity to be walking around in 'Murica and being brown. Make your own truth!

I'll put a vote behind lesbian Korean. Oh the immigration and denial of equal rights that would come out of that. HOMOSEXUALS CANNOT CAN FOOD OR BUY NAILS EVER AGAIN1!!!!111!!! KIMCHI BANNED IN US!!!!!!

I'd be fine with a Bin Laden-ing of whoever did this. Find him, "take care of it," and dump him in the ocean. I'm so tired of terrible people being made into an anti-hero. We put their "stats" up on TV and compare them to all of the other ones and it feeds into the continuation of these acts. Its been said many times, but lets focus on the victims and the real heroes that jumped into action.

I am quietly "hoping" (fort lack of a better word) it being a gun crazy guy who wants to make a point why assault weapon should not be banned, a NRA member. Then lets see about this issue. I fear though it will as happened so far with Newtown change nothing.
