A Sermon on this Sunday

...and now, Santorum saying this speech makes him "want to throw up".

I wonder why we've fallen so far back into darkness.

10 responses so far

  • matt says:

I blame it on High Fructose Corn Syrup and lack on NIH funding.

  • drugmonkey says:

Really? Here I was thinking it was the vaccines...

  • becca says:

I don't know DM. It's an awfully longwinded way of saying "Imma follow my conscience, not the Pope".

It's not that such a speech would sound strange today, and we haven't come so far. It's that it would sound strange today coming from a Catholic. Any Muslim running for the presidency, and possibly any Jew or Hindu, would have to give a similar speech. The speech wasn't motivated by an honest reflection of the lack of importance of religion in public life (though I'm sure JFK may have honestly felt that, it's not why the speech was needed). It's a direct response to bias against Catholics.

  • anon says:

It's not just about bias against catholics, it's part of the fuckin constitution. As a senator, Santorum swore (on the bible, perhaps?) that he would serve to uphold the constitution. I wonder how he would defend that action. I also wonder how he would defend the words of every Republican's hero, Ronald Reagan:

"We in the United States, above all, must remember that lesson, for we were founded as a nation of openness to people of all beliefs. And so we must remain. Our very unity has been strengthened by our pluralism. We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate."

I wonder what other aspects of the constitution or civil rights makes Santorum want to vomit?

  • Eli Rabett says:

Because Santorum does not remember that the Ivys had quotas for all sorts of Catholics back then.

  • iGrrrl says:

Yep, Eli. The chair of a department I was once in had been RFK's freshman roommate at Harvard, because they couldn't put a Jew or a Catholic in with the Protestant boys.

  • drugmonkey says:

Now why is everyone under the sun sending me that today, SN?

  • Spiny Norman says:

Maybe you seem a bit sleepy?

  • Katie says:

Yes, I am. Caught in traffic bumper to bumper. Ready to go to sleep. Tomorrow morning up at 5 a.m. grant-writing
